Traditional braces can introduce new challenges for teenagers. Certain foods may need to be avoided, brushing and flossing can take more time, and brackets and wires may be noticeable in school photographs and social situations.
Invisalign provides a clear aligner alternative for qualifying teens. At Bagnall Family Dentistry, Dr. Matt Bagnall can evaluate your teen’s smile and determine whether Invisalign is appropriate for their orthodontic needs.
Benefits of Invisalign for Teens
Parents may be concerned about the responsibility involved with clear aligners. Teenagers must follow their treatment instructions, care for their trays, and attend progress appointments.
For teens who can manage these responsibilities, Invisalign may provide several advantages.
Invisalign Compared With Traditional Braces
- Clear aligners are discreet and less noticeable.
- Teens can continue enjoying many of their favorite foods.
- Bagnall Family Dentistry instructs patients to wear their aligners while eating.
- Aligners can be removed when brushing, flossing, and cleaning the trays.
- There are no metal brackets or wires.
- The smooth aligners may cause less irritation to the cheeks and gums.
- Invisalign may be suitable for sports and other active routines.
- Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic benefits that may contribute toward treatment.
- Treatment is planned using precise digital scans.
- Progress is monitored by Dr. Matt Bagnall and the dental team.
- Brackets and wires are visible.
- Certain hard, sticky, or chewy foods can damage the appliance.
- Brushing and flossing around brackets may require additional care.
- Wires and brackets can occasionally irritate the cheeks or gums.
- Damaged brackets or wires may require an additional appointment.
- Teens involved in contact sports may need specialized mouth protection.
- Regular adjustment appointments are required.
- Poor oral hygiene around brackets may increase the risk of plaque buildup and white spots.
Is Invisalign Right for Every Teen?
Invisalign may treat crowding, gaps, and certain bite problems, but it is not appropriate for every teenager.
Suitability depends on:
Dr. Bagnall will examine your teen’s teeth and bite before recommending Invisalign or another orthodontic option.
Wearing Invisalign During Treatment
Bagnall Family Dentistry instructs Invisalign patients to wear their trays throughout the day and night, including while eating and sleeping. Aligners should only be removed when cleaning the teeth or trays.
Patients should also:
Minimize Sugary and Acidic Foods and Drinks
Minimize sugary and acidic foods and drinks
Avoid Strong Yellow Dyes
Avoid turmeric, mustard, and foods containing strong yellow dyes
Clean Teeth and Trays
Clean their teeth and trays regularly
Minor Break
Continue wearing an aligner if it develops a minor break
Keep All Previous Trays
Keep all previous trays
Progress Appointments
Bring every tray to progress appointments
Lost Tray
Contact the office if a tray is lost
Attachment
Inform the team if an attachment comes off
Consistent wear is important for keeping treatment progressing as planned.
Invisalign for Active Teens
Clear aligners do not contain protruding brackets or wires, which may make them convenient for teens involved in school, music, theater, and sports.
Teens participating in contact sports should ask the dental team about appropriate mouth protection. Aligners do not replace a properly fitted athletic mouthguard.
Invisalign Treatment Time for Teens
Treatment time varies for every patient. It depends on the complexity of the case, the required tooth movements, and how consistently the teen follows the prescribed instructions.
After evaluating your teen’s smile, Dr. Bagnall can provide a personalized treatment estimate and explain the expected appointment schedule.
