If a dentist or orthodontist has told you that you are not a suitable candidate for Invisalign, it may be because your case requires more complex tooth or bite movement.

Invisalign may be used to address several orthodontic concerns, including:

  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Open bites
  • Crowded teeth

However, Invisalign is not appropriate for every patient. The type and severity of the concern, the condition of your teeth and gums, and the required tooth movements must all be evaluated.

Dr. Matt Bagnall can examine your smile and determine whether Invisalign or another orthodontic option may be appropriate.

Can I Get Invisalign if I Have an Overbite?

An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth. A small amount of overlap is common, but a more pronounced overbite may be described as a deep bite.

A significant overbite may contribute to uneven tooth wear, enamel damage, gum concerns, or jaw discomfort. Invisalign may correct certain overbites by gradually repositioning the teeth.

More complex cases may require additional appliances or another orthodontic approach. A clinical evaluation is necessary to determine whether Invisalign can provide the required movement.

Can I Get Invisalign if I Have an Underbite?

An underbite occurs when the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper teeth when the mouth is closed.

An underbite may affect chewing, speaking, tooth wear, and the way the upper and lower teeth fit together. Invisalign may help correct some underbites by repositioning the teeth.

If the underbite is related to the position or development of the jaw, additional treatment may be required. Dr. Bagnall can evaluate the cause and discuss suitable options.

Can I Get Invisalign if I Have a Crossbite?

A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of slightly outside them.

When left untreated, a crossbite may contribute to uneven tooth wear, chipped teeth, gum recession, or jaw discomfort. Invisalign may be able to treat certain crossbites by gradually moving the affected teeth into a healthier position.

The suitability of Invisalign depends on the number of teeth involved and the severity of the crossbite.

Can I Get Invisalign if I Have Gaps Between My Teeth?

Gaps between teeth are also called spacing concerns. They occur when there is excess space between two or more teeth.

Food and plaque may become trapped in these spaces, potentially increasing the risk of gum irritation or other oral health concerns. Invisalign may close certain gaps by gradually moving the teeth closer together.

The cause and size of the spaces must be evaluated before treatment begins.

Can I Get Invisalign if I Have an Open Bite?

An open bite occurs when the upper and lower teeth do not meet properly when the mouth is closed.

This condition may make it difficult to bite into certain foods, chew comfortably, or speak clearly. It may also contribute to uneven tooth wear or jaw discomfort.

Invisalign may correct certain open bites, but more complex cases could require additional orthodontic treatment.

Can Invisalign Treat Complex Cases?

Advances in clear aligner treatment allow Invisalign to address a wider range of orthodontic concerns than before. Attachments and other treatment features may help create specific tooth movements.

However, no treatment can be recommended without examining the patient’s teeth, gums, bite, and supporting bone. Some complex cases may still be treated more predictably with braces or another orthodontic approach.

If you were previously told that Invisalign is not an option, a second evaluation may help you understand whether clear aligner treatment is now suitable for your needs.
